Using English when you travel

Traveling offers excellent opportunities to practice your English! Of course this is true when you’re traveling to English-speaking countries, but it’s also true when traveling to many other countries that don’t speak your language. Why? Because English is a very common second-language for people all over the world. Whether you’re speaking to other tourists, ordering in a restaurant, or booking a hotel, knowing a few key words in English will make your trip more pleasant and enriching.

Start your English practice before your trip

Although not everyone likes to plan their entire trip ahead of time, it’s usually a good idea to reserve a place to stay for at least the first night or two. Here are some practical questions you can ask when booking accommodations at hotels, hostels, bed & breakfasts, or through Airbnb:

1. Are there any rooms available for (July 1st and July 2nd)? or
   Do you have any vacancies (July 1st and July 2nd)?
2. What are the room rates? (i.e. price/cost per night)
3. What time is check-in? (i.e. At what hour does the rental start?)
   What time is check-out? (i.e. By what hour must I leave?)
4. What is your cancellation policy?
   (i.e. What are the rules should I have to cancel my reservation?)
5. Is the accommodation pet-friendly?
   (i.e. Are dogs and cats welcome?)
6. Is there WIFI access?
7. Is breakfast included?
   (Many places offer breakfast at no extra cost.
   A “continental breakfast” is a light breakfast that often includes baked goods, jam, fruit, and coffee.)
