Everyday Conversation

Running Into a Friend - vocabulary & expressions

Learning English for social situations

Many of my students want to learn or improve their English for work or school. However, I also have students who simply want to sound more natural and fluid in social situations:

  • They want to know what to say when they get introduced to someone at a party.
  • They want to be able to flirt with the amiable barista at the coffee shop.
  • They want to learn some everyday expressions for when they run into a friend on the street.

Everyday English expressions, idioms, and phrasal verbs

Learning – and using – a new English expression every week is a great way to quickly gain confidence in social situations. The English language is rich in expressions, idioms, and phrasal verbs. There are so many, in fact, that even native English speakers don’t know them all. However, there are many common ones that you can use almost every day. Once you learn them, you will begin to notice how often you hear them as well!

Running into a friend

In the video above, I cover a lot of vocabulary that you may find useful when you meet a friend unexpectedly. Here are the definitions of some of that vocabulary:

Run into (phrasal verb): to meet someone unexpectedly

Long time no see (expression/idiom): used to greet someone you haven’t seen in a long time

Small world (expression/idiom): often used when you discover that you have a mutual acquaintance with someone. It suggests that the world feels smaller than it is due to surprising coincidences.

What expression will you use this week?

It takes a bit of courage to use a new expression, but the more often you do, the more confident you will become. If you’re not sure if you used the expression correctly, ask the person you’re talking to. If it’s the amiable barista, (s)he will likely be charmed by your request for help, since asking for help is often a great way to flirt! 😉

I’m available for online English classes

I’m still taking students for private online English lessons. If you’re looking for a teacher, please contact me, and we can discuss your English learning goals!
